Insight Art Gallery

Exciting things are happening at Insight Art Gallery in 2014.  Things are changing!In August 2005, Guy and I began showing art at my studio, Insight Art Gallery.  Nine years later, we have had 50 art shows. Many of Galiano’s exceptional artists have shown at the gallery and there have been lots of very popular shows.  Musicians and poets, local and from afar, have performed and inspired visitors at our opening receptions.Now, the gallery is opening for yet another season, and it is time for some exciting changes.  A group of practicing artists, Francine Renaud, Bruce Dolsen, Betsy Fairbrother, Laurie Maccallum, Anne Popperwell (of Saturna Island) and I, have formed a cooperative group – ‘The Group of Six’.  We are six island artists who have come together, and are inspired and committed to making art.  Our first show, which opens on Saturday, May 31, will be called ‘Introducing the Group of Six’.  Each month, we will be opening a show of new work, and each month we will be adding to the picture of what we want to say.  We will all be present at each opening reception and we invite everyone to come to the gallery and share our new cooperative energy and visual offerings

Tish Saunders

For many years I have painted realistic landscapes, healing mandalas, abstracts on canvas – always exploring new ways to paint.  When using sacred geometry, my strokes of colour (tessellations) resulted in landscapes that were reminiscent of mosaics.  This year I began using broken china and tiles to create still lifes and landscapes that are mosaics.   Now I’d like to share with viewers, the fun I’ve had recycling china and forming it into Irises, tulips and poppies, or a series of steaming coffee cups!

For the opening of my first season with The Group of 6, I chose a theme dear to my heart: The Moon.

The Moon is a very strong element I keep on rediscovering with awe from this Island.

Through its regular hide and go see it changes nightly our experience of dusk, deep night and dawn.

Its presence is multiplied on an island, given that the waters surrounding us act as reflectors.

I am moved to explore the range of colours our skies offer around her presence, while forests, meadows and shores take on such different proportions.  A different set of creatures show up for her light…..

I have been painting and exhibiting my work in public and private galleries for over twenty years. My paintings in watercolour on paper and acrylic on canvas are included in private, corporate and public collections in Canada and in private collections in the U.S. and Europe

My primary inspiration and fascination has always been nature and I hope in my paintings to share my experience of the beauty and joy of our stunning natural world. –

For a while now, I have been using classic forms or shapes, and coastal environmental elements as a basis from which to explore the unglazed surface.   To me this means impregnating the surface with smoke, colouring the clay body with stains, imbedding texture with colourants or leaving the surface bare.  My recent work includes 2-dimensional pieces which incorporate natural and found objects.

In the darkness of winter, I was drawn to paint with colour, lots of colour. My subjects are treasures found, island landscapes, dreams and bees.  Painting has become like learning a language to me, an expression and response to my world. I hope to express lightness, joy and the good things in life.

Bruce Dolsen

I have been painting and showing my work on Galiano for the last seven years. I have come to embrace the natural beauty of this island and the endless food it offers the artist’s eye. The wave-carved shores contain a history of continuous human habitation going back thousands of years, and one of my favourite places to paint is the white shell beach at Montague Provincial Park. I seek to capture the moment in colour, form and line.
